RCMP willfully violated man's rights, judge rules
The RCMP have been ordered to pay an Ottawa man $100,000 for willfully breaching his rights when they raided his home and warehouse, putting him out of business.
An Ontario Superior Court Judge found Cpl. Louis Noreau of Ottawa RCMP violated Andre Lahaie's protection against unreasonable search and seizure. The judge further found Noreau's conduct was 'encouraged' by his superiors.
RCMP raided Lahaie's business and home in November 1998 and seized his company's entire stock of U.S. satellite equipment.
