States to Track Drivers Through Licenses
A federal program promotes driving license technology that allows the tracking of motorists even when they are not driving.

http://www.thenewspaper.com/rlc/pix/wa-edl.jpgElectronic monitoring of motorists will soon expand dramatically as states including Arizona, Michigan, Vermont and Washington begin to use radio frequency identification (RFID) chips in drivers' licenses. These electronic chips broadcast the identity of any card holder to any chip-reading sensor within a minimum of thirty feet. The US Department of Homeland Security is promoting the tracking projects as part of its Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative.

bud02 comment:
Did you read the min. range 30 ft, thats because of the large antenna that can be used in a credit card sized device.
Talk about keeping track of the sheep, its already illegal in most states to not have proper identification on your person.

"Multiple cards can be read at a distance and simultaneously with vicinity RFID technology, allowing an entire car full of people to be processed at once," a DHS fact sheet on the Passport Card technology explained.

So-called enhanced drivers' licenses are designed to meet the DHS travel document requirements. Enhanced card holders will be allowed to travel across the border without a passport when new regulations take effect in January 2009. The enhanced licenses electronically store the motorist's name, date of birth, height, weight and identity number on the card. RFID readers use the identity number to access additional private information from a department of motor vehicles database.

Although the licenses will initially be offered on a voluntary basis, the National Motorists Association suggests that it will not take long for the program to become mandatory.

"The federal government just incentivizes their proposal so that each state, and by extension its citizens, feel like they have no choice but to go along with their program," the NIMI stated today.

The Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC) warns that the move is another step toward a national identity card.

"DHS, Arizona, Vermont and Washington are creating these new ID cards in order to change the state driver's license in to a federal border security identification document," the ERIC website explained. "The license is pulled away from its original intent -- to ensure driving competence -- and used as a multi-use federal identification document that could easily be transformed into a national identity card."

Not every state is sold on the idea. The California State Senate voted in Arril to ban RFID drivers' licenses. The bill passed an Assembly committee by a 9-5 vote in July.

getting away from the question a bit. Netconn is actually 100% right on the function of this particular card. what i'd like to find out is if they can be opened up or if one would need an entire system to print them. was hoping a paper clip and some chewed bubble gum would do it.

So why are you trying to get into a locked gate that you don't already have access to? Planning on robbing somebody or what?

I took a 'PikePass' apart (RF toll road card) and it looked very much like this device.

Hes going to need a RFID reader /writer most are 13.56MHz RF, get started for
under a 100.00.
But he needs to know what freq that card talks on, if he wants to play 007

Axxess is a leader security system and use 125 kHz RFID.
they have their finger in automotive OnStar®, cash systems, medical application. Integrated Access Management to Fingerprint biometrics for complete security.
sounds like fun but their toys are spendy.

No Jt, not a thief to the people, only to the man! Lefty's application is probably closer to what this is though. Just always liked the idea of a free lift ticket.Would definitely invest a couple hundred bucks but it sounds like a prety secure system and a can of worms with no guaruntees at that. Thanks for the good info Bud02, much appreciated!

I know why this guy wants to 'test', to those of us that live in a large city............parking downtown is upwards of $25 for day or several hours ( it's just as much of a rip off as airport parking)!

He said it upfront, just wants to beat 'The System'.

PS oh, has anyone had to park at a hospital lately, they make the guys downtown look like choirboys.

Don't get me wrong guys, I'm all for cheating the parking meter and toll roads and the like. It's that sneaking into your exe's house etc. that's hard to be supportive of. :)

We have had folks ask others to help with breaking into their ex's house is why I was concerned. Not that I'm anyone to be preaching morality. ;)
