View Full Version : I found an Apple iPod yesterday. Advice needed!

I take a lightrail train every day for work. Yesterday, I looked down at the floor and there was an Apple iPod just lying there, so I picked it up. The train wasn't particularly full, and there was no one near me who claimed that it was theirs. I have ZERO experience with iPods. I solve the crossword and sudoku puzzles from the newspaper for my entertainment during the 45-minute ride, but I see lots of people wearing/using them. I looked carefully for any identifying marks on it, but there are none. I tried to power it on, but it was as dead as a doornail.
Once I got to my final destination for my trip home, I stopped by at the Apple Store to see if it worked and if it was worth anything. The worker told me that it was an iPod Classic with a 30 GB hard drive. He partially charged it up for me and told me that there were over 2,000 songs on it and it also had about 5 videos of some sort on it, but the battery was losing juice before we had a real chance to explore it much. He says that they don't sell the 30 GB model anymore, but he would estimate that it would be worth about $200 brand new, which this iPod obviously isn't. I asked him what else I would need to charge it up and download new songs/movies on it, and he pointed me toward a $29.00 item on the rack -- a USB charger/cord contraption. He also told me that once I download iTunes onto my computer, that all of the songs will be erased from the iPod when they "sync." I didn't catch it if the videos would be lost too, but in my excitement over my lucky find, I didn't think to ask him. Anyway, I told him thanks, but no thanks, I'm going to give eBay a whirl, since I'm a cheapskate.
Well, there you have it. What I want to know is what would you recommend that I buy for it on eBay (with hxxp link if possible), so that I can charge it up and possibly put different music on it (in case I really don't like the songs that are on it). Also, if I do like some of the songs, how can I keep them and not have them erased once it's synced with my iTunes. Thanks.

Just dont sync it, it will appear as a regular USB storage device.
When you use the USB charger. You will be able to C/P them out if you like.
I never heard of losing your songs buy installing Ipod on a new computer
unless you a tard.
Nice find my kid has the same model.

My computer currently doesn't have iTunes on it. So, once I buy a USB to iPod cable, I will simply be able to trash any song that I dislike like any file on any other USB device?
Do I need the charger, or will the iPod charge up from the computer with the USB to iPod cable?
Does your kid put movies on it? I'm curious as to how many movies in MPEG-4 format would fit on 30 GB.

It charges threw the USB
Itunes will want to make a directory that it syncs the computer to ipod or sync the ipod to computer. After its installed and you hit sync it reads the locations and makes them the same.
That creates your library. Itunes will convert MP3s or video files to be used on the device.
Only thing I think he has put on it in video is short clips downloaded from net.
Your not going to watching Batman Im sure.
Usb to Ipod is all you need. Itunes download is different according to your device FYI.
Like most other devices you can manualy C/P music in and out If you want. once you understand the folder directory structure. Keeping 2000 songs on one I would want an easy way
to browse them Itunes is pretty easy but you may not always want to wait for the sync thats when a quick C/P is handy.

iTunes sucks ass, I use Anapod Explorer, it interfaces with Windows explorer. I'll post a "cracked" version for you if the mods allow it...I've got the exact same iPod Classic you found, 30Gb black, it's a very nice little unit!
Unfortunately, I don't use mine much, it will playback full length movies, it only supports MP4 video format though, you'll have to download (easy to find these days) or convert any video you want to watch on it to MP4, there's a plethora of s/w programs availabe to do this out there. A movie takes up about 700-800 Mb's so you can fit quite a few on it! The video playback is surprisingly good, very watchable...
Spend the $29 and get the cable, it'll charge the battery and act as data transfer cable to the unit, well worth the $29!!

Mine's white, but I'm glad that you're happy with yours. Honestly, before this find, I was in no hurry to buy one -- ever! Now that I have one, I'm looking to maximize my enjoyment of it. I'll probably use it for watching movies on the train.

I'm probably going to learn all about Handbrake very soon.

I found this one for less than $6. It also allows my car to charge it up:

It doesn't have the "Apple" brand, but it seems worth the risk of purchasing it.

Lizard King, don't pay the $29....that $6 will do the job (as long as it says it's compatible with the Apple Ipods). I have purchased several "non-Apple" USB cords for both the computer and the car. If I stuck just with Apple brands, I would have paid WAY over $100 just for cords by now.
When you get the cord, just hook the IPod up to iTunes and do a "reset" to format the hardrive. Then you can use iTunes (or the other program suggested above) to transfer music, movies, ect to your device.
Great find...hope you have fun with it!!! I have two iTouch models and LOVE them!!!
Apple sets the standard for these!!!

That cable is from Hong Kong, it'll take forever (weeks) to get, not to mention shipping is probably $20...

Yes, it's from Hong Kong, but the shipping is free. I'm in no real hurry to get this contraption up and running. I've been living my life quite nicely without one for many years!

The lizard king If you dont like or want to use Itunes which I didnt for my Ipod I used a program called anapod explorer this allows you to go through the music folder delete the songs/ playlist you dont want as well as videos...No if you want to add music you can just drag the audio files over in anapod and poof it thir in your music folder, for videos since itunes converts videos you have to get another program to convert any video you want and has to convert to mp4 formatt, this is a program I use to convert my videos its called, WinAVI iPod/PSP/3GP/MP4 Video Converter..I just pretty much dont like itunes slows your computer and has to many pop up when you want to play a song with another player....Also hong kong wont take long a week at most, and if you really want find a marshalls or tjmxx there like no more than 10bux there...

iPod is great device, but iTunes is horible. Yes, if you install a fresh copy of itunes, and hook up your ipod all songs are deleted. Happened to me twice. I hunted around the software before hooking up my ipod the 2nd time for an option to keep songs on device or some option like that, found a few options that led me to believe my songs will not delete, but they did anyway. These were just mp3's, not itune bought songs.

Well LK you may be better just forgetting about itunes altogether and using another system, but itunes is ok and has some nice features once you get used to it.
You can indeed copy the music from the ipod you found onto your computer, there are lots of ways to do that. Then you would have it in you library so it doesn't matter if when you "sync" it, it erases the stuff from the ipod....you could move what you want back onto the ipod.
After that, if you don't want it to sync, you choose the manual setting in itunes and move whatever you want around.
There's good info in this story
hxxp://www.ilounge.com/index.php/articles/comments/copying-music-from-ipod-to-computer
You could also consider putting an add in craigslist in your town saying you found an ipod with terrible tunes on it, did anyone lost one? ha ha that might bring some good karma

Just force the thing into disk mode.
Toggle the Hold switch on and off. (Set it to Hold, then turn it off again.)
Press and hold the Menu and Select buttons for at least 6 seconds until the Apple logo appears.
When the Apple logo appears, release the Menu and Select buttons and immediately press and hold the Select and the Play/Pause buttons until the Disk Mode screen appears.
Then you should be able to drag and drop your music to the folders.
Great to see you still stop by every once in a while Budreaux. Nice to see you!

Man, it's been a while...
I relocated due to a great job opportunity and I've been so damn busy.
I'm sorry I was out of touch during the Hurricane Ike issues for SJ.....
I'm thinking bout getting back into this for some messing around, but I mainly wanted to see who all was still hanging out.

Might not be optimum timing right now with possible N3 conversion starting maybe. We'll see. I'm still not convinced that it's really starting yet. We might have till 3rd quarter or even later. We'll see. Just let us know if you need any help with anything.
