cannot read from drive sounds like wrong port or drive not unlocked.
If powering from 360, ensure 360 has a video cable.. or it will cut power to drive after 5 minutes.

slax to modeB, takes 2 eject presses to open tray. this confirms modeB is entered properly.
Boot windows.
insert AudioCD and play back 1 full time, then play-pause quickly.
Eject audioCD.
Now run Unlock79 program.
Should say Done! after few seconds. Drive is now read/writeable.

Now insert original game, wait 15-20 seconds.
Load firmware toolbox. should detect 0079 drive.
Proceed as you are doing a V78 drive. (raw dump, save, etc.)

heres where the problem is . when i typ in (79unlock e ) my computer and the x 360 locks up. i have used two diff computers and 2 diff ways of unlocking this drive (79 fl ) ive used the slax cd and the i prep and they both did the same thing . im using the m1 slot on the sata which is the closest sata connection to the front of the computer, the only thing i can think that poss my new sata card isnt working propperly. do i have to run the 79 unlock and name the drive ? i get a done after the first time . locks after the second

hmm.. I have a V79 here but its already flashed. I can try to replicate the problem... off the top of my head it would seem the drive isn't in the correct mode maybe? 79unlock changes some bytes in the drives ram the audioCD unlocks for access (at least it appears that way)
Have you tried the program jungleflasher? it may help you with this part if it works on your system. Find it at xbins in the liteon firmware.

i suggest you read the flash again /then restore flash and then write to it again
if it is flashed with extreme 1.2/1.3/1.4 firmware it will restore the flash
i have done this before on different drive
and the jungleflasher may help you its kind of tricky to use
i been up alll night trying to read someone liteo-drive
i am kind of stuck with it wondering if i have to put drive in mode b first
i have four programs i use for the 79 and litheon drives
haha typo somewhere i guess i am tired right now
but try that you will get threw buddy

LiteOn are dead easy. Jungleflasher does everything for me but 3120s.
LiteOn just need dosflash and firmtool and a bootable dos environment... takes 2 minutes tops.

Any hitachi drive should be restored to original firmware. if you are starting with original firmware, which he is or unlocking wouldn't be an issue, you don' have to do a restore - just get a good dump.

JungleFlasher 0.0.26B
Firmware Toolbox 4.8 (don't use 4.7!)
Xtractor 2.7

Also forgot that jungleflasher needs PortIO installed. it comes with the package. if you don't install it can't see your drives as it has to see the drive before windows does and directly comm with it. as for making an hitachi firmware, I only know of Firmware Toolbox that will make the one you want.. there is so many hitachis and so much different patchiing that doing it yourself could be bad.. as theres a few key loc for each drive rev too.

I finally figured this motherF***er out.To get my 79fl to unlock i had to i had to run the 79 unlock wave file 3 times . also had to check the settings on the sata card t make sure that my card wasnt set to raid . Make sure sata card was in stalled properly.

can i use the same steps for all the lower hitachi drives such as the 46 dg?

V32,46,47,59 all need to be put into ModeB. can be done wiith a 1K resistor.
V78/79 were the only troublesome drives where they attempted to lock the firmware from R/W. V79 is by far the hardest drive to do hands down.

load your modded firmware file in firmware toolbox and regenerate your original dump, then flash that back to the console.. then you can opt to redump the original firmware or use your generated original firmware to remodify.

To put into modeB theres a few options. The easiest is to use a connectivity kit - aside from that an old 1K or 10K resistor to short some pins when powering up works.. thats what the connectivity kits do.

If its already flashed I think you can eject the tray and power off the drive or something to re-enter modeB without the resistor/connectivity kit - depending on which firmware is installed currently.

In firmware toolbox:

File -> open (select modified firmware from modded 46 drive)
select tools -> recover lost original file
wait 5-10 sec while it generates the firmware

now you have an original firmware. Write back to drive.
then proceed modding the firmware with an updated one. power cycle the drive and flash it again.

heres how to enter modeB with already flashed hitachi Xtreme firmwares:

Power on the Xbox 360 console.

* Open the drive Tray, by pressing the EJECT button.

* Pull the power plug on xbox 360 from back of console.

* This will force the console to leave the tray in the OPEN position.

* Plug the power brick back into the Xbox 360.

* Power on Xbox 360 using the "power" button.

* Drive is now in Mode B.

Just to add I noted jungleflasher 0.0.43 was released. just tried it out. Its much more stable, and idiot-proof, with added redundancy features to prevent bricks.. plus easier to work with as more things than before are automated. If I had my lens blocks I would test out these V78/V79 with it but since they need to read a disc to do dumps it makes that nearly impossible.

Kudos Jungle Team for the dedicated work in developing a program for an all in one solution..

Also forgot, you can restore the firmware using the bat files too.. find an old Xtreme or iXtreme hitachi package and it should have restore.bat, just open a command prompt and type restore.bat <driveletter> it will restore everything to what it should be drive-side.. hopefully it don't freeze on you. Only works on V32,46,47,59.. no 78 or 79 in dos friends.

This may be eaiser than firmware toolbox as that method don't require you to use a disc to unlock the firmware R/W... also works in windows or dos I believe.... only ever used windows for any hitachi tho.

best drive for ripping is a kreon PC drive. SH-D162C or 163A I think. should get them for around $50 shipped.

samsungs suck at ejecting. just to warn you.
