I just bought one of the slingers but a probably dumb question from a non very expert guy..
I have what we call a wireless modem to use at home so any PC or lap in my home can use it for connecting to the internet...
does the slinger will conect directly wireless with it or do I need to buy a "router" shown in the client description instructions?

There is no such thing as a wireless modem. There is modems (phone dial up, Cable or ADSL) an dthere are wireless routers. I saw a good picture posted last night here it is

so you can see a modem is what sits between your wireless router and your ISP so to answer your question you already have all the hardware you need.

Some dsl modems have built in wireless, But on the rear you do have the standard ethernet port(s) still.
Westell makes alot of these.

Get a wireless bridge to connect to your slinger and the wireless bridge will connect wirelessly to your wireless modem.

It sounds like the modem is 2.4GhHz using the 802.11g standard. Frankly you may not have enough bandwidth or just barely since it will top out at 54mbps and frankly you probably won't get that. Depends on where the modem is located (e.g. signal has to go through walls and perhaps floors, also if you have cordless phones that operate on the same band, they can cause interference)) and the further away the less throughput.

I'd put the modem beside the TV, use an RG45 cable and directly connect to the Slinger that way you'll get all the bandwidth your cable or dsl offers.

PS there is a new 'N' but not standardized and your present computers nor the modem support it. but it is a helluva lot faster and longer range.

Thanks Bro!

Oops, you got here before I could edit. The network cable will have RJ45 connectors (looks like a big telephone plug) not rg, sorry I'm left handed. ;-)

I have a question along the same line. I'm using a Linksys N wireless router. Unfortunately I have everything in dif. rooms and am unable to move router. Linsys has a wireless print server that seems like it would work. It has RJ45 port so it should hook right up to slinger. Just config server to info above and should work. Right?? Hate to spend the cash for something that won't work.

Thanks

To get internet from your router to your precious slinger, wirelessly, you need a wireless bridge. As with all these gadgets, try not to cry too loud when support vanishes into thin air.

I asked about the print server because I already have one. I have not yet purchased a slinger. This is a hobby; all solutions being cards or gadgets eventually go down or loose support. It may sometimes be an expensive hobby but so are many others. To each their own I guess.

if you can post the model of that print server, we can check it out for you.

Most likely its not going to work, unless it has additional (RJ45/ethernet) ports.

Its a linksys WPSM54G. It has a RJ45/ethernet port. From what I've read here and in its docs it looks like it will work.
I was a little concerned about if it would be fast enough. I'm not real interested in having to buy a bridge (extra $100) if this would work. Hobbies are expensive but still want to watch the $.

Thanks

I actually pay for TV. I use the hobby to get channels in my workshop ( without paying for extra receiver). Plus I just like to tinker and get the feeling I'm getting back at the high cost providers. It's mostly just the fun of it

Seems like that should work. But looking at the instructions for it, looks like the port is used to configure the wirless print server.

You can try this to see if it will work. Connect a computer to that port and see if you can get on the internet.. If you can, that means you will be able to connect the slinger to it. If you can't might have to spend that $100. I'm sure you can find something cheaper.

Yeah and cable or subbing is cheaper but don't we just Love the Larceny when it comes to testing? ;-)

It's not the money, it's beating these Theives at their own game and that's why beer exists, have a cold one when WE Win! ;-)

PS or two, or three.......................................LOL! ;-)

PPS personally, I'm a Scotch single malt type but beer does have it's place.

Mili provided a program to solve some problems, but with said wireless hardware, perhaps could install it and then re-direct but if it's looking for a USB printer........?

That's the problem, and may be a complete 'kluster fuk' to get around. Also even though the new printers are USB, it may mimic the LPT1 standard...........talking about the various parallel protocols (check your Bios settings, all there). Perhaps the USB isn non specific for printing and all you older guys know about parallel.

Only thing I can say is get it from a big box store and come back and complain that your Wife purchased the Wrong thing and get your money back or a credit.

I haven't messed around with said hardware but would think the 'basics' were carried over to the USB format, but could be wrong with regards to computer to printer speak.

If you don't try, won't know.
