Slinger seems to be the only thinig going on Nagra 3 so I'm collecting information on it. My testing skills have atrophied since I switched to FTA so forgive any ignorance inherent in my questions.

I used to use AVR's on my 2600 and 7200. I still have the IRD's with their old cards (not sure what rev the cards are). Its seems like TSOP images or at least box keys are required to load onto the Slinger? I can JTAG the 2600 but last time I checked the 7200 was not JTAG'able so that rules that box out eh? Or do I just need to use a public CAM ROM file? I really liked that 7200.

I'm not clear on whether DN HD works through the Slinger.

If I can't use my 7200 I'd want a DVR IRD for the living room. Any suggestions? If HD is working I'd surely want that too.

Would it be better to buy an IRD outright or get a sub?

What is stopping Charlie from ECM'ing your IRD's like he used to do with AVR/ATMEGAs? Seems like he could just look at whatever public CAM key all the public Slinger users are using and send an ECM to it to zap any IRD's with that CAM and your IRD would need to be JTAG'ed. I don't want to go out and spend 2 bills on the Slinger and another 3-5 bills on a DVR and/or HD IRD and have Charlie brick it.

I see that the WRT homebrew Linksys routers are listed as not working. Anyone look into why? Seems like if anything would work it would be that. It's what I'm using so I'm curious. I would think a simple firewall change would take care of it.

TIA!

Both the 2600 and the 7200 are very old receivers. You would be better off getting a receiver from Mili when you buy your Slinger. The 301's are the easiest to work with (IMHO).

All of the current High Def DVR receivers are in the VIP family and are not currently supported by Slinger (yet). Like I said, it's best to start with a basic receiver and then (when you get it all up and understand the technology) move up to a HD receiver (by then, there will probably be better support for them with Slinger).

It's not better to get a receiver from the provider, as most are 'leased" now versus owned. And you know that hacking a leased receiver is not a great idea.

ECMs are not a problem (yet) but there is always that possibility. Get a buffered JTAG from Mili when you get the 301 and you will always be able to bring your receiver back (never a "brick").

Hope this helps!

It does, thanks. I'm on the fence though. I would want at least DVR to start with so thats a >$500 investment for a modded DVR IRD, JTAG and Slinger. UVerse triple package is going to cost me another ~$50 above my current internet and phone so thats a 10 month ROI...

Maybe. I don't want to jump the gun. I'll just get a sub on something (UVerse is looking like the frontrunner right now) until things settle down.

Excellent description of the current status quo!

PS that's why it's called 'Testing' not watching.

You can pick up a DVR (Model 501-508- or 510) from Fleabay right now for less than $50 if you look hard enough. The 501 has the least amount of hard drive space, but the easiest to hack.

The "most" expensive investment at this point for you would be the Slinger. As it is still in Beta testing, you might want to just look for a 501-508-510 that has a married ROM102 at REV103 on FleaBay and watch the dwindling Classic 250 until it's all gone. The Slinger should be fully proven by then (or disproven...?).

Oh, I'm watching the N2 channels on my CNX box right now. Just trying to get a jump on my next testing solution for N3. If a 501 is ~$50 then that brings the price down. $50 for 501, $40 for JTAG, $200 for Slinger. I'm not sure how the NFusion differs from the slinger. It would seem that it would be even cheaper and easier but I'm having a hard time finding definiitive information about the NVision, what works on it and how the support is.

I know I know...testing not watching. I just want my testing to be cost effective. ;)
