View Full Version : Slinger could be a Reliable Testing Tool

I was watching TV yesterday around 11 pm central time DN with a very little freezing left my PVR recording the end of the picture and guess what?? did not finished, the slinger got froze for good arround 20 min later...
This is just my opinion I'm not the expert.. I guess the idea and the hardware is very nice... Connecting "N" open users to a single server for the same Iks not working.
I think the future of this system will be a smaller group of users conected to make this testing method a GOOD usable one!....
Milli or others should stablish a small network of paid users (my guesstimation max 40) to use a private setup with a server and create several small units of Iks shareing people to make this usable in the future....
Any way I'm happy with the posibility to watch some TV
Just my opinion ok?

Panch, I am getting no freezing this saturday morning on Bev. Maybe some adjustments have been made and I'm not speaking too soon. We will see tonight.
Pancho,
You agree that 'testing' doesn't necessarily mean watching. There are extenuating circumstances that may affect end users.
Search 'vmware', that will explain a few things and how great the software is, it can hiccup or crash the server.
The 'Net isn't like you getting into your car, consult the map and drive to your destination using the shortest possible route. It's a bloody spiderweb, the data can take up to 20 bounces and only if the X'th bounce can pass it off.
Then also consider atmospheric conditions, hey, I'm pointing S.W. bluebird clear skies and get pixelation and even signal loss. The 'birds' are over the Gulf of Mexico, storms there will significantly cause problems if one was in New York.
Also, I have no idea of the firmware and software defaults..............lose the C.W.s, how long to wait for a resend or just reboot and try again?
This is complicated shit and more or less is being developed on the Go and that's the only way to Debug.
I was watching all day today and no freezing whatsoever. They got the fucking thing under control it seems!!!

Milli this is a nice testing tool... I guess when a "bunch" of us get hooked this thing start to freeze and there is times very few are hook and it works much better.. I still think this is going to work when a network of small number of users get hook with several servers and sub cards to spread the thing in the future

I switched over to Dish last night and am getting freezing. Bev is freeze free.
I asked they say they are adding more subbed units to their setups next week that should get rid of freezing. We'll see.

I agree with Pancho... I think eventually when the slinger thing becomes more stable, it will give birth to private IKS with more channels available. I wouldn't mind paying a private IKS link if it gets as stable and efficient as romcode.
Guess I'll stick with my working romcode while it lasts...
and then I'll keep testing on my free time... if I get some :D
P.D. Pancho dude thanx for all your help man!

This device wasn't created with everyone getting free TV in mind... It has its limitations and drawbacks but lots of potential for anyone good with networking.
Its purpose was to share subscription in a group of 30-40 IRDs. 10 people on a sub with 3-4 receivers a piece would be perfect. at a pricetag of $800US a person for the slingers, then your $15-20 a month to keep the sub paid- a legit sub seems like a cheaper solution.
Unless you setup RQCS and fed the slinger to the RQCS server, I can't see why that wouldn't work... then you'd only need 1 slinger to feed your mini-server.

Theres no programming per-se with this.. updating the drivers via USB maybe.. You plunk your card into the IRD and the RJ45 into the lil dongle box. Its dead simple, especially if you are opting for client mode. Information is slowly emerging on it, looks to be a solid device provided public stays up or you get 10 of em :)

if i have 2 or more friends how many slinger and receiver i need and i can use my own 3100 box

one slinger per receiver. 2 or more friends, assuming one IRD each, would be 2 or more slingers.
