No mode problem with my Atmega 256

i m trying to program my Atmega 256, and it keep telling " no mode" . And to make matter worst, it couldnt even dictect it....please dose anyone know how i shsould fix this problem?..thanks

What program are you using to program that Atmega256? What flash are you trying to write?
Are you erasing the Atmega256 BEFORE attempting to write to it?
