wife is pissed.. she's missing those soap (international). so I'm thinking of subscribing.

If I do, what receiver would be a good choice? I'm thinking of just buying one from flea bay and activate it. Don't wanna sign up for any contract.

Do I really need to tell them that I want dvr to be able to record tv? what if I just get a dvr receiver, will I be able to record tv without their knowledge? I want a hd receiver and possibly dvr capability which I can modify later when (if) N3 is open to us. Please let me know what receiver has bright future for us testers

Using your mouse and the scroll bar in your browser, go to the top of the screen on this very page.

There are four options for receivers there.

If you already own one, there is an option to have it modded.

The Slinger is also displayed.

Thank you and please enjoy the site.

If you want DVR capability without the provider knowing, then you will have to clone a 301 (or other) receiver's information (boxkeys, CAID, and SK/DT08) into a 501-508 or 510. The fact that you want HD service negates this idea.

The provider knows what kind of receiver you have by the CAID (Serial) number. All of the serials are in their database along with what type of receiver they belong to.

Because all of the HD DVR's are new receivers, they ALL have BGA-type chips on them that prevents them from being JTAG'd in the conventional manner. You would have to have Mili's tech modify them and place "new" info on them that matched a non-DVR receiver (and I'm not sure this would work with the new DVRs....I think they require a DVR tier to make the DVR functions work).

Any way you look at it, you won't be getting around the provider's charge for DVR service (I think it's about $5-6 now) and their charge for HD access (I think that's about $9-10 now). So before you are even talking about channel packages, you are already down by $15 per month (and that's without a contract).

I would be very careful about buying an ird off fleabay. Done that before but three of my friends got Burnt. Nothing wrong with trying to save a few bucks in these trying times.

Thing about this, you're not planning to have an accident and write-off your car or burning down your house, right?

That's why we have Insurance, hate paying for it but if one needs it...........it's there. Check out Mili's selection, you won't get Screwed and he stands behind everything he offers.

Besides, helps pay to keep this Site online!

lefty,

I know how mili supports the testing community and if I was buying a modded receiver or slinger, I would buy it from mili. but no international channels are up with slinger. so I don't have a choice but to sub, and I wanna go the cheapest possible way.

Thanks zerokill and rg6a for your input. I might go for a vip 211 if I go sub, they're not that expensive and later I can send it to mili for modding. Anybody know of the vip 211K? I hear you can add an external hard drive to it, to make it a dvr?

Thanks again.

vip"K" models cannot be modded at this time. Keyset info is burned into CPU, thus that would also have to be replaced and its not a viable option.

corporate america just stickin it to ya, that's all.

If ya really wanna save DVR fees, sub a simple ol' 301.13 that you pick up on fleabay for <$20. Make sure and ask the seller for the R00 number, (sticker on back of ird) before you buy it. Then call DishNet, give them this number and ask if there is a balance on the acct. If not, then buy it. NO harm in doing this, DlshNet rep once even said this is a good action to take!

When you get it, hook it up to your satellite and call DishNet to activate it. They will send you a brand new purple 241 and it will be subbed w/ whatever ch's you want....Someone correct me if wrong, but if you opt to NOT take the promotional 6mo, or 1yr price, you could then cancel this sub whenever you want, with NO penalty since you own the equip???

Now, if u have a DVR lying around that u want to use, dump the tsop firmware of the 301.13 via simple jtag that you can make for <$10 and find the sk's, ird# and BK's. If you also have this info for the DVR, (assuming you do if you used it for N2), then you are set.

Setup freeware cardshare software, (either RQCS or NKshare) and share your subbed 301 card with however many receivers you want. You could even share it with friends on the otherside of the country, no problem. Everyone splits the sub billl and you end up with a $10/month, sub. Hell, sub everything you can it will still be cheap.

No worries about feds kicking in your door, private setup b/t trusted friends/family. Doesn't get much better.

good luck

I called to sub an old 7100 I had, but was told it wouldn't work. They are now sending me a new 508(free) and are not going to charge me the DVR fee because the 7100 didn't get that fee.
Here's the good part I can send the 7100 back and get a $10.00 discount off next bill or just throw it away(right)It has a new card they sent me. i will forget the $10.00 and keep the card.
Had to call tech support because the ones in India won't help.

interesting idea. I'm not too worried about the dvr thing as I have a pvr setup. only issue is the recording is pretty crappy with the capture card I have, and you have to have the pvr box running all the time.

I have a couple 311 (icam removed and mounted on card) and a 301.13(j-tagged), I would need new cards on them right? maybe I should call them and try to activate the 301.13 and see what they say. are you saying even if I cancel my sub, the tiers will still be there?

I don't know much about cardsharing as I haven't done it myself, I would like to explore your idea a bit more :)

Don't get all fuzzy inside...DishNet has a funny idea of "gifting". Although you "think" they are giving you a receiver (even if you are agreeing to a contract length of a certain # of months), when that time expires, don't be shocked if when you want to quit, if they ask you to send that receiver back to them. If you are not straight up exchanging money for their product, then it is still "theirs".

What was saying earlier is that should a real rom241 solution be posted free for public consumption, IF YOU OWN your own equipment, you can simply call carlie and cancel without ANY penalities. Just make sure you confirm this w/ them on phone. You may havea to send them back your card, no biggie.

not saying to cancel sub, in order for the subed cam, (if running cardshare, its in your ISO programmer) to continue feeding control words to all your client receivers, it HAS TO be currently subscribed.

If you called and canceled the sub, the card would no longer receive tier/ird updates and it would expire. As there is NO public 241 hack, your card would be done since we can't simply update the expire dates.

This is Free! No contract! If you own your equi. it is a replacement and is your's. I've been with them for more years than I like to think about and this isn't the first time they've done this for me.
I can quit tomorrow if I wanted to. I own all my equi. and no contract.
So I can get all fuzzy inside!

pecker88, I'm not disputing what you are saying, but I just want to get this straight. If I have (3) 301.13's laying around, that are mine, I call dish to make sure there is no balance, get them subbed with rom 241's, swap the sk's, ird# and BK's with (3) 501 or 510's I have laying around, and I will have working dvr's? With no dvr fees? With no contract? Is this correct?

you are correct. You are essentially cloning your sub'd 301's to 5xx ird's = no dvr fee, then just throw your 24x cams into dvr's and your set. This is axactly what i've done. DN thinks a 2800 is subbed, when in fact, a 508 is. With old legacy ird's it was simple, just change the BK's and ird info of "target" ird to match those of sub and that's it.

I'm only 95% sure you wont' have contract, hence the bold sentence in post above; just wanting some1 to confirm. You would obivously have to pay full month price, (NOT promotional price) which is usually about 1/2 for being 1st time subber.

this is also the reason i'm fairly certain N3 will get busted WIDE open. Seems to me all keyset marying info is the exact same as it was for N2. DT08, SK, prvt N & D, ect...There is simply too much know about N2 and what'ya know, the SAME method is used in N3. Little similarities b/t N2/3 such as this will come back to bit n @ g r a; wait and see.

Pecker88 just gave some valuable advice about purchasing an ird from the fleabay!!

Mentioned earlier that 3 friends got burnt buying from the flea, that was Exactly what happened and no matter how much prodding, bought it here, there, fleabay................Black Listed.

The amount they asked for to reinstate the irds......$198-250, on account of past due payments. Natch, one could jtag or whatever but if a newbie wants to sub, Mili is the guy.

Always OWN your stuff, as another Member here mentioned........NO Contracts, can pull the pin anytime.

Good Luck

PS check what Int'ls are on what bird first and make sure you have a clean shot.

I called them about activating my old 301 (hope it still works), they said the new smart card will cost me $50. I think I'm going activate this and follow packer88's idea and get a 501 to build my dvr.

Can anyone educate me (links maybe) on cardsharing? I understand the basic concept but with these equipments (301, 311, 811) what are my options.

Thanks.

Here is a link to the thread about RQCS Cardsharing:

The 311 and 811 will need to be modified by Mili because they can't be JTAG'd to either extract the BK/SK info or flash a public BIN to the receiver.

You can get a prepaid (monthly) DP301 with a G3/N3 card already included brand new from Fleabay for around $55. (Use "dish network prepaid" as your search term). This is a better solution as you don't have to give too much info to the provider.

no ones running anything right now. buy some stuff and tell us how they work so we know what to get.

as for subbing, and HD and PVR talk.. the old 301s work with MCE for me, I have yet to find an HD capture card though.. all composite.

If you can jtag, what's with the tsop lock, don't need it. Perhaps leave it open so it can take updates, as for the power up problems............thiat <T>hread is here somewhere, so do a search.

Wish I could help but don't Test and send all my money to the Providers.
