View Full Version : A few questions on subbing

Im one of the long time testers that does not rely on a dish sub to watch tv...so, when all channels are gone, I'm going to sub with dish. A few questions about subbing though...
1. If I call dish and tell them I have my own equipment, are they going to insist that I get professional install? Don't want installers snooping around.
2. I have a 301 receiver with a G3 that I bought from ebay...will they turn this receiver on over the phone, if there is no balance on it?
3. I also plan on getting 2 more 301 receivers that I have turned on also, but I don't have G3 cards for them. Do they charge you for the cards?
I want to make sure I have all my ducks lined up before I call. (quack quack):D

1- no because the installers are only paid if you commit to a 2 year contract, Most installers are so underpaid and stupid they don't care anyway.
2 - Yes if it has not been tsop edited. The fucker better be orginal as they have records. The boxkeys better be the correct ones for that ird number and the ird in the tsop better be the on on the tag. They will turn it on over the phone with all your personal info and your valid major credit card and ssn number. If it doesn't turn on the first try they will send a installer out to look you over that is looking for edited ird's.
3- no charge for cards, But the ird's better match records again for roo and boxkeys or 2 applies again.

IF you agree to a contract there will be no charge for the cards. If you go on a month-to-month subscription, they will charge you $50 per card, per receiver.
If you get an American CSR, sometimes you can talk them into waiving activation fees, but count on this:
You will pay for 2 months worth of bills (plus activation fee of $25)...first and last month.
Although they claim the process will be easy, they will want your complete information, including your social security number. They will want a major credit card and put a $200 hold on it for at least 48 hours until the 2 months bills clear (important if using a Debit card tied to your bank acct).
NOW, having said that....they have a program called DishNow which is a prepaid account that is month-to-month. You only have to give basic info (and this can be fake...they don't check). You have to have a receiver that already has the DishNow Firmware on it...not every receiver can qualify for this program. RatShack sells these receivers, or you can find them on FleaBay. Best part about this one is you don't have to give up creditcard info (you buy prepaid cards at RatShack or other places) and they don't charge you activation fees (even if you have a lapse in your sub...like you take a 2 month vacation).

Damn! Card fee's, activation fee's, SS #, edited tsops, bk's, r00's, credit cards, CSR's from India, $200.00 hold, first and last month payments, 2 year contract's, mother's maiden name, first born child... I better think this over some. Thanks guys.

they will also ask you for your shoe size
DO NOT give your social security number to anyone other than your bank and your health care provider. There is no legitimate reason anyone other than the absolute essential folks out there need that information. Tell them they are crazy to ask for that if they do.

Great advice JT, but the Indian/Pakastani CSR's will not open an account/subscription without a Social Security Number. If you demand to speak to a "supervisor", the supervisor will advise you to purchase the DishNow or DishYa Prepaid system, which does not require the SS#'s to activate the account.
Charlie feels the need to be able to reach into your credit report if you quit his service before the contract expires or fail to return "his" receiver that you may or may not have paid for.

If you are using your own equipment, I don't see the need for him to need your SSN.

PPV bills can run quite high, many fleabay IRD's come with a debt from people who run up a bill and then refuse to pay so to have a responsible party d*ish now requires a SSN#

I called up a CSR the other day. Apparently, if you already own the equipment, they still need your SSN to find out if you had service with them before and if you have a delinquent account with them.

Well then Charlie can go fuck himself, and that's what people should say when asked for this info. Charlie does not need that information and only a fool would give it out in this circumstances. (not intended to be offensive to you zerokill, just saying it's foolish to give out your social security info to anyone who doesn't actually need it) Can you say identity theft? Who knows where the info goes and whether or not the operator is writing the info down for future uses unbeknown to Charlie.

Sure, you can Charlie to f-off if you want, as it's true you don't by law have to give your SS#.
Problem is, there is no law that says that Charlie has to provide you with the service if you refuse to give him your SS#.
So if you refuse to give him your number, he can refuse to provide you with the service...

They will run a quick credit check while you are opening your account. Don't think the dead guy thing will fly.

Fellows, the REALLY cool thing about the DishNOW/DishYa "prepaid" receivers is that the program was designed for illegal immigrants with no Social Security Numbers...that's why you don't have to provide one for that program.....
It's like they WANT you to give false info and be subversive....He he he

Buddy you are preaching to the choir....I tried to get water delivered to my house the other day (our city water tastes foul!!!) and called Sparkles. They would NOT open an account for me without a Social Security Number. I told them they could have my drivers license number, but not my SSN. They refused to open an account for me. I had to buy three big jugs from Wally World and get my water from them instead.
Sparkles tastes MUCH better than Wally World water by the way!!!!

The problem is that you can't have your local networks carried by Charlie and you can't have your Fox RSN station(s).

Checked into dishNow...The units run about $100.00 dollars each, and that doesn't even include the programming. I need at least 3 receivers in the house to keep everyone happy.
Get 3 Slingers and use your existing receivers. No monthly payments.

Believe me mili, I've pondered that, but now you are talking over $600.00 for 3 receivers. I can't cough up that kind of bread. Too bad you have to have a Slinger for each receiver in the house. :(

And then we all become justified in stealing their programming. Only a moron would give a TV provider their SS number.

Just saying what the law is.
And you know how all of us here are such sticklers when it comes to obeying the law.
$600 one time or $200 per month forever. Hmmm. Hard one to decide :)
duh1 I wonder why you need drama?
mili
In Canada, no company can demand your SSN, it's illegal. Some credit card application
forms will try but in parenthesis beside the line it says Optional.
Don't give it out but if you have earlier, can't even give them a bogus one as the credit bureau has it.:-(
A deuce a month forever, go with the sl*ngers, start with one and a radio shaft prepaid for now.
