I've been thinking about getting into this type of stuff for the past couple months, but never did much due to the N3 encryption that hasn't been broken yet.
It seems like the only option is the Slinger.
I was looking at the ViP722k receiver from Dish, but wasn't sure what I would need to do to get that receiver working.
I was looking at the modification services found here http://www.dssftp.com/xcart/product.php?productid=16137 and it says " BGA TSOP programming for the VIP722. NOT THE ViP722k RECEIVERS!!!"
What does this modification do? Why is it needed?
It also doesn't say it works for the 722k receivers, only the 722 receivers.

The VIP722 cannot be JTAG'd to get information necessary for the Slinger to work.
Therefore, you need to send it to Milis tech to remove the BGA and replace it with a BGA with known numbers.
The VIP722K is a newer version of that receiver and cannot be currently modified.
Any receiver with a "K" after the number cannot be currently modified.

You need a image for any IRD to work that is why you have the BGA programmed. They clone your IRD from a public IRD and send you a image to use with your testing device. The 722k can't be done publicly yet they are private only. Also remember that pulbic clone IRDs that are done can easily be blacklisted by Dish and shut down. This has not happened for awhile but can. It is always better to have a private cloned IRD. There are also other options for testing besides the Slinger.

- So the service I would pay for would not have this problem, right? Or are you saying even after I go through with the service, there is still a decent possibility that Dish will shut down my receiver?

Only if your receiver is programmed with the public information. If you purchase the BGA programming service from mili you will get your own set of private numbers exclusive only to that receiver.
