solder the wires directly into the reciever and leave the female in there.............leaving it where I can easily attach and deattach?
Sure, you can do that. Not practical, but to each his own.
I highly recommend getting those other parts for the buffered jtag.
The parts are CHEAP. The IRD is one of the more desirable ones out there. Don't scrimp on the jtag hardware. Read and re-read here and unwink.com and you won't go wrong and he sells a printed circuit board that EASY to build.
On my first 420's I soldered a row of header pins much like mili's page shows, except I left the header pins bare so I could plug the jtag cable onto the header.
Now I use micro drill bits (the kind welders use to clean torch tips) to drill the solder holes out, then insert the jtag connector pins into the holes (it's a very light press fit, almost like a needle being pushed into the holes), do the duty and remove the connector from the MB. Test the system, then seal the solder with Finalkote on a q-tip.
As for the tiny ribbon cable, it's the connector for the front panel controls. It's an easy remove/insert. Nothing special, just use care.
Other things I usually do to the IRD is use a jumper for the WP circuit. I also change the power LED to RED so as to know easily on powerup, it's a nozkt IRD from the pile.
When I do 430's though, that little surface mount LED is a real bear to change. Almost need a microscope the be sure it get soldered in properly (tired old eyes). And SM LED's are hard to find in my circle of scrap and junk parts.

I use a simple j-tag and it works fine, as for your connections your fine up to the 2nd row of #'s ,what the hell are they? You don't need to take the board out of the receiver, and I've found it easiest to solder wires to resistors and the just heat and drop resistor legs right thru the solder holes on the board. Keep your wires short,6-10" I guess and everything will be fine. I've done 15 or so this way.

here we go:
tdo-----13
trst-----5
tdi------4
tck-----3
tms-----2
and 18-25 go to ground............Rock on..........
This is hookup for a SIMPLE jtag.....
