Kohler Jump Start
We bought a tow truck for our company and it has a kohler jump starting unit on it. Thing hasn't ran in years. We redid the kohler engine which now runs pretty good but not sure about the rest. It has 2 older style generators and a solenoid that need to be wired up and can not find any info on the net. The kohler motor runs a belt to 2 genorators and I'm guessing the solenoid is for turning the genorators on or off but not to sure. Anybody have any ideas where i can find any info?

So the generator section is non functional? Have you inpected the wiring?
Those solenoid relays are high amperage. The ones from an auto supply can't handle the current for long. The generators are high output as well. But you knew that. A tip - start the engine, but have the cables connected to a good test battery. Now rev the engine up to a mid range RPM. Now flip the switch to initiate charging. If the amp guage moves to the positive that's good. Now flip to off, then flip the discharge to see what the gauge reads. If the gen's are functional you'll see amp gauge flucuations. If not, the gen's may be shot or maybe just need brushes. They're easy to rebuild, but the parts are again, heavy duty. And be sure the belts are tight (if it has belts). If trying to start a completely dead vehicle, you'll need to ground the genset to the vehicle to polarize the system to begin charging. I'll see if I can find the manuals for ours. Even if it's a different model, theory is same and wiring will be very similar.

Hey wtp.........I don't know where my head was..........the Kohler is the ENGINE.....the JUMP START section is likely a Goodall unit.
wXw.goodallmfg.com I hope this is the unit you're looking for. Let me know.

Yes, the motor is a kohler. Not sure on the jump start unit. I'll try explain what I got. Theres a button on the unit (looks like a old style floor dimmer switch) that you push which takes the truck battery and turns the generators in return starts the kohler engine. must be a daul purpose generators. To start the kohler engine and once running the generaotrs produce the powere to jump start. I don't understand the toggle switch. Theres a 3 way toggle switch on the unit. All the way up and the kohler wont turn over. middle postion and the kohler won't turn over. all the way down and it starts but according to the amp gauge it is charging or ready to jump something but have no juice at the end of the cables. Thats one of the problems I'm having. The other is i have no idea what the other toggle switch settings are for. If you could find your manul that would be great. Oh yea, the belts are tight.
