extractor extractor

i been reading around this site for a few day's...looks great!!
if someone can help with this one it would be better than a p4 hack...almost
I broke a stainless 1/4" bolt off on the out-drive of my boat, drilled it then inserted "easy-out" proceaded to turn easy-out till it broke off!!!!
Question is...anybody make a bolt extractor extractor?
it's very confined space not the drive but the casing the drive mounts to, i've heard of putting a ball bearing on it and giving it a smack to shatter the easyout but there's no room to manouver :repuke:

Sounds like your pretty much fucked. You should have used heat at the beginning.I once had one like that on an intake manifold.I ended up having to get another manifold from the junkyard. Now yours being a marine problem compounds your trouble. Just remember when putting it back together grease the threads of the bolts. Aluminum with stainless =electrolisis= trouble. There is no drilling easy outs hardened. GOOD LUCK

bout what i thought...fucked, i was afraid to put any heat to it cause it's about 1/4" away from a non-removeable rubber boot, it's just a pivot cap cover, so i'm just gunna seal it with silicone...still has 3 other bolt's and i don't think it's a critical part...lol

Use 5200 sealent by 3m . Silicon seal won't last long in saltwater if at all. 5200 holds just about anything together on a boat but you have to let it cure for 72 hours.

just a suggestion from an old wrench puller who has broken his share of easy-outs.
You can try a sharp rap on a DULL center punch to shatter it, or cobalt drill bit with
a reverse flute, and run your drill in reverse.Hope this helps you out.

I agree with wrench47
I have got myself out of many situations with a revese drill bit. It might help if possible (not always) to use some heat first. A rap with center punch as said could help as well even if it does not shatter easyout it may loosen broken bolt.

Good luck and let us know how it goes and what you did.

ty for the replys. I used the 3m sealent for a temp. fix (got a fishing derby this weekend) I'll pull it back out after that and try the cobalt bit, I'll be using a kicker moter most of the day so i can't see it doing any damage if water get's in, it's just a coverplate on the intermediate housing and i can't get a swing at it with a hammer the air drill barely fit's,i gotta cut the bit down to fit that in there.

They make what is called a diamond tip drill bit they cost $200.00 US. and yes they cut tool steel like a knife cuts butter. I have broke a threader off in a cylinder head before. What I did was get a 3/8 diamond tip drill bit drilled the hole out bigger and then bought a heli coil set then put a little silicone around the heli coil with the bolt in the hole and let it set up then un screwed the bolt all finished. They even make steel inserts with a 3/8's outer diameter and larger like 15/16 even and 1/4 inner diameter or any size you want there with epoxy on the threads so all you do is drill your hole out bigger thread your new hole and screw it in and heat seals it in for good.

good luck

Holy crap!! $200.00ea, I would'nt wanna have to buy a set, maybe i'll try taking the stone outta the wifes ring (been nothing but trouble since i bought it anyway) put it in the drill & try that 1st.
I dont think the extracter is in there too far before it broke, so cobalt bit (i hope) will do it.
gunna catch the big 1 in the morning and put the winnings towards a charlie system so i can get my monster garage back. hell today I climbed up 6 sections of antenna had to stand on the top rung to turn the damn thing around so i could get some stations, the roter siezed up from lack of use i guess
