Find somebody or some business that has an uprotected wireless hub (that's 2/3rd of all wireless hubs installed, on average) and a cable or wireless connection. Then just go sit outside and link in with your wireless card. There are at least three locations at my local U that are unprotected. It's kind of fun because you don't even have to log in, you just have to be in the right proximity and away you go.

Someday folks with wireless hubs will figure out how wide open they are and do something about it. (I have a friend that gives me shit because I won't use a wireless hub, I will only use the old fashioned kind that you must run cat5 cable for) But for now, most people just plug everything in and if it works, they don't do anything else. If they are using wireless or a cable connection then they pretty much can't even tell you are 'piggybacking' on their connection....unless you start downloading full length feature films or something that uses a significant amount of their bandwith. Even then, they will probably just think they are having an issue with their ISP, and by the time they can do anything about it, your gone.

Wireless is ok, if done right.

Forget the basic 802.11 security model. It's junk.

I use a linux box with a wireless card as my access point. I filter any MAC address that I don't know about.

That... and my only neighbors are a 60 year old lady on one side, and a sheep ranch on the other. I wont get worried until I see anntenna's on the sheep.

If I get real paranoid I'll force a VPN over the link to access.

Your are correct though... most people don't even know they are providing an poen netowork to the world.

Wireless is secure if you take the time to set it up right. I'ts just that most folks don't know what it takes.

I install cable modems / wireless routers for a living. I always install WEP on my customers, but you would be amazed how many unsecured gateways a wireless card will detect in any apartment building.

Yea me too. I have cable modem and use a WEP as well as a MAC address to only allow my laptop access.
Usually when I turn on my laptop and check for signal I get at least 4 unprotected gateways.
Just for the heck of it sometimes I use my neighbors wireless connections and they work quite well :-)
Download speeds of 400-600Mbs are always welcomed :-)

My neighbor has that DirectWay dish for the internet. As we all live in the country, thats the only way besides dial-up. I only get 2100, on a good day. How can I steal his shit and so called piggyback off his signal. I dont know if he has wireless. But I could be a really good neighbor and buy him one for his birthday. I am sure he would like that. LOL

Geat program to see if there is an available wireless network around is Netstumbler. I made a waveguide antenna out of a Dole pineapple juice can for about 20 bucks in parts.
Go to turnpoint.net/wireless/cantennahowto.html and have a look. I haven't paid for wireless for over a year and still have a 1.5mbs cable connection.

I use internetr connwction sharing on my desktop to use my laptop thru the gateway.
My nieghbor wants to connect in with me but take my 800bps on a good day and divide that by three = under 300 if we were all three on it.
I run thru a switch so putting him on would not be a problem but he lives 1000 yards up thru a field so I dont know if a network cable would carry that far.
If he lives close you can insall a nic and run a crossovercable to his nic and set him to obtain ip automatcally and set your nic at 168.192.0.1 which your sat device will do for you when you click on ICS for your primary connection.
all then is set your subnet on the second connection and set him to enable DCHP.

hell I am sorry he has the directway not u,, reverse the procedure then or go get a $149 dlink wireless router that comes with a usb point and set the hub on his and plug the usb into yours and ya'll can share the connection that way or set up a ICS or a network gateway thru his link

Need help if anyone will help me. I just got a D-Link AirPlus Xtreme G wireless Router and know nothing about how to set it up Also Have th eAirPlusXtremeG Adapter card. I am presently hooked up with broadband using a network hub which allows my daughter and myself to share the net together . The purpose of me getting the wireless is so that my wife can now have access to the net but her computer is located in another building and I thought I could install the adapter in her computer and she would have access via wireless but I have no idea as how to set this up . Your help would be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance!!

Usually this stuff comes with quick install procedures or a cd that you can install and rest is self explanatory.

By the way I leave my wireless router open to anyone. Come live next to me and you will have free internet. its fast fun and free for everyone.

What kind of router you and your daughter use,
couple of ways to do this. send me the model number of the wireless and I will look it up.
you can put a NIC in you or your daughters pc and set the wireless to run to the ole lady's or you can set the wilress router as your gateway and run from it to (1) you computer and (2) your wife and (3) the the network hub to put your daughter in line with it all.
the easyest way would be to make your computer hook up to the wireless router as a second NIC so your wife comes through you to get to the router and keep you and your daughter on the hub.
like Sukk said it has a quick how to usually you hook it up and type in a addresss in the internet explorer bar like 192.168.0.1 for example and it will ping the router and bring up a set up screen.

hell I am probabily making this worse.
send me some more info and maybe somebody else can jump in also and we will get er going.
Is the card wireless or does it have a place for a network cable.\what kind of pc is your wife using. laptop or desktop and what does it have as far as a network card in it?

Hey Sukh sorry about the misspelling of your name in other post,
Actually I was just looking at you other post fixing to chime in.
Know to much ..ha ha I doubt it!
about whats her name like mili was saying he is right. I went thru it for two years I never got over her I just learned to live with it and after I did get over it I'll be Damn we got back together as whole new people and we are very comfortable rite now,
It did take alot of drinking and drugs to live with it for awhile until I got so messed up I HAD to get my shit straight clean up and learn that it is ok not to be ok.
just let the rough end drag!!!!
dint want to type that in the other thread out of respect for Chief and hate to start a new on so we will just hijack this one..lol

no really it will be ok dude now lets get this guy networked!!!!! I think he should go ICS on his machine to the wireless router and he will be the gateway for his wife's and him and his duaghter will stay on the hub because it sounds like they need the hub for there interrnet provider, IF not then I would drop the hub all together and Tigert422 and little tiger run thru the dlink out to the internet and MS tiger goes with the wireless card in her machine thru the dlink router.
that way dad always has the most bandwith as the client and mom wil still be zooming at least at %80 of the total allocated..

good to hear from ya man hang in there lets pop some 382 or A23's or something I all the sudden have some spare time...........

Thanks fubr.

I think he should eliminate the hub, just use the router. I assume it has regular network connection as well as wireless. Then the only thing he would need to do is setup the wife's wireless connection which should not be too hard. Hope fully he has quick installation guide for both the router and net card.

yep!
Hopefully when he gets home he can fill us in I think drop the hub.
unless it is a cable modem.
sounds like dsl so drop the hub and use the dlink for all three he just has to follow the guide to set it up for his isp.
dlink is pretty cool a step obove netgear and ofcourse 2nd only to cisco who I think actually invented or should I say wrote the book on networking devices,
the hospitals I have dealt with with a cisco router where always the best.

He does he just needs the right patch cables and connect to the router and it will tell him the rest.
hell If I have to my buddy has the same shit still in the box I will go get it and replacate Tigert422's situatiuon here. whish I had the it in the car still I just dropped it off took it with me on evry project as a back up if there network was screwed up or did not like the machines I was installing.

Ok Fellows here is the deal and I'm a little slow at figuring things out since I'm recovering from an operation on my head . Here is the deal I need to keep the router hooked to the modem cable that I have it is broadband and in everone's computer we have the ethnet adapter to get on line . When I used the wireless it slowed down my daughter's computer because she has a server that she brought and chat with her friends and it created a problem so the hub is used for her and mines since we are tied into the hub from one room to another and I have a boaster so that the signal stays strong. So the wireless was to be hooked to my wife's computer and from what I was reading from what you guys was saying that it can piggy back off of our connection but I don't know how to figure this out. In the far end of the house is my wife's computer it is a room addition that was made
for her with more closet space etc. So I figure with the wireless it could pick up the connect from our service that we have thru wideopenwest( same as roadrunner). Don't know those other terms that you guys was using. Can not drop the hub it is cable modem. As mentioned earlier it is a D-Link Wireless broadband Model #DI-624. I also installed the PCI card in my wife's computer which is a desktop. All of the computers are desktops hope this helps and thanks in advance.

ok no problem.
Trail and error.
how many ethernet connections do you have on your pc.

hook your ethernet to the router and the other one from the hub to the router and go to command and type ipconfig /all and see if it finds your network card the router and the hub then we wil hook up your wifes's
see if you can get on internet before you go further

what version windows you got?

looks like you will need to set the dlink up from your computer and assign it a internal ip for your wife to log on to and you will be running thru it to the cable hub.
when you put it in here computer did it get a connection signal, we will figure out the ip's and gateways later.

My computer and my daughter's computer is connected to the hub and the both of us can get on line , so we have two connections via the ethnet running thru the hub connected thru the modem. My wife's computer has the wireless router and the wireless card hooked to her computer with nothing else connected. There is no way she can be connected to us . This is why I got the wireless hoping to have her piggy back off of our connection.

If you have cable just disconnect the hub all together go from cable modem to router. You should still have connection to both of your computers. Then we will figure out your wifes.

ok she gets the wireless card in her pc.
you get to run a cable from the hub into the wireless router in one of the prot swithes.
run another cable from one of the other ports back to the router, you just turned the router into a switch.
if the software set up on her pc automatically then she should have a connection.
you should have one straight ou using it as a switch.
now what you need to do is configure the wireless router to accept her wireless card to connect her to you hub which will be the internet gateway.
for the wireless part to work you have to go thru the set up on it from your wife's computer on hook your computer in where it says WAN and type in the address the book tells you to to configure the wireless router.
the dlink will be a junction for you to acces the hub. you duaghter is already in the hub so ya'll both are live.
the wireless part comes into play whne your wife's wireless card tries to get a signal from the wireless part of the dlink router.
only she will be wireless.
how many ports does the cable modem hub have. if it has 3 then hook all three into it!!!
one for you one for daughter and one for the dlink. then configure the dlink for your wifes wireless card.
Hard for me to explain I am sorry if I am confusing you.
rmember you defaultgateway is going to be the cable modem.
the wireless scope should be a total diferent set of numbers than your other two computers.

Hey man , I service teh routers for a living and I also have a situation similar to yours. I have a daughter who loves AIM, so I xan understand the bandwith lag. I would recommend and comp withing 100 ft to be hardwired with cat5e line and all the other comps wireless. Now if your daughters comp is hardlined and you need bandwith for downloading, you can go into the routers configuration and temporarily suspend traffic to her PC. You also have to keep in mind that teenagers are suckers for spyware which can kill your bandwith. Keep her in line with downloading games and such, put an antivirus prog on her comp and try to limit her time on kazaa.

Regards,
