hammermd,

Well first off, doesn't matter what model IRD you have. Even if you have the big expensive IRD's, you'll still be an open target for ECM's if you're greedy. It all depends on the testing device & tiers you choose. The PVR (Tivo-like)
can get ECM'd as easily as your 3900. The way I understand it, the most reliable technique is as follows...

1) Full legit
2) Emulation
3) Plastic
4) Atmega
5) AVR

"How often can I expect to buy a new card (because of looping ECMs & etc)? "

Only one (plastic) will be needed. Just need to program it properly and apply the right blocker.

You can run emulation if you don't mind having it hooked up to your PC or another....
Depending on what version of EMU you want to run will give you different results during ECM activity.\

Winvu-Gets hit
Cemu-OK
RamCemu-OK............

I personally run Cemu with a 266 mhz hidden away in a cupboard,no cable showing...........it's not a case of if it's better than plastic,..........
just hasn't been hit for a long time....!
Plastic can also give you this benifit as long as you write the tiers as best you can to mirror a legit sub as possible......Have had a ROM3 on dish for 2 yrs and not once been hit.
So really the choice is yours and how you want to test these devices

emu & plastic are just about neck 'n neck. I no longer test with emu but from what I've read at other sites, emu is more stable than plastic. Just seems like it got a better 'report card'.

Cut & paste from another site...

"I would also by the max232 emu board from any number of sites. Its far and away the simplest and purest way to emulate. Get the cable that goes with it. From there its just running the software of your choice!" by ghopson427

Use RTM. Select America's top 150 + whatever few locals you want. If you don't want any PPV, just don't check the PPV string.

BTW...your etiquette is fine!

Safer not to choose PPV as this will leave you open to possible ECM,but as you state you don't need it anyway...
so do as chapster says....
this is what testing is all about.

BTW....youre doing good ...keep it up!
