Dodge Van

CARBUERATED, uhh old, "galded ass" red in color, I assume it is a 318
just went and picked it up and it is dark, late and I am tired.
SO on the way home about 5 times I had to pull over and let it sit a minute.
Acted like it was not getting gas.
pump the gas to get it to crank and it ran fine for a few more miles.
me thinks it is carb trouble and I have not had chance to get into it yet,
this guy gives it to me to work out of and I am supposed to make a living in this piece of shit,
so till I get my Safari (other piece of shit) going

wondering what common causes or first things to check.

Could just be a bad batch of gas or clogged fuel filter, you may also want to hit it with some carb and choke cleaner. Also check the air filter.

I almost think its the fuel pump????

At higher than idle speeds the fuel pump cant keep up until you stop and let the pump get enough gas into the carb. Thats my opinion.

318, good motor. Run forever.

I know Marvel works good as oil treatment but I wonder how it is on gas cleaner

Quick way to check fubr is if it has a fuel filter see through glass thingy, get under the hood and rev the carb manually and watch the filter to see if it goes low. Easy to see. If you dont have one, 5 dollars at schucks.

Let it rev at around 1500 for 5 minutes watching the fuel filter glass or until it cuts out. If its any other thing except the carb, it will go low.

Left before daylight got home after dark.
I put some good ole alabama moonshine in the fuel and some Mystery oil and a tank of "good gas"
ran fien all day so maybe it was the fuel sytem blockage,
If U can drag it on three leggs till this weekend it will be fine,

THE oil looks like malox so I am not going to do no more than I have to until I get mine fixed then he gets this one back.
oil is not even 2 months old accoriding to the service sticker so I guess the head gasket is shot too.

thanks for the tips guys,
with a screen name like mopar I would guess your a chrysler man!!!!
and yes 318 DAMN good motors.
get up fast because of the short stroke but crusing at to many rpms for much 8o MPH trips.

I know a little something about mopars....LOL

Im not much of a small block person though. Gotta have a 426/440 motor. Love those big blocks....Beat up on one of those new dodge cummins turbo diesels with my 75 powerwagon/440 combo. To make the story even better, the dude must of been 70 years old....with grandma. (Chief?) LOL

You want a bad ass 318???? Go with a 318 poly. They have like semi-hemi heads. They did a mock up with a stock 318 with all original parts and got like 400 hp out of it. I think all they did was change the compression, cam, and a little head work that a normal person could do at home.

Gotta love them.

I was gonna say the other night that with a scren name like mopar you might know some of the main issues.
I used to have a fury with a 318 and a pick up. motor was fine nad it would haul a hell of a load but the electrical was like a illegal abortion, and the carb flodded alot. never the less I bought it fo $400 and used it for my business and it paid for itself 100 times over for the wood and material I hauled on it.
now this van is running fine except for the it wants to stay cranked when you turn switch off.
some days I just cut it off in gear then put in park and turn the switch all the way off.

I just need it to last a few more weeks

I dont understand your last question. Is the starter staying engaged or is the motor just not shutting off? Is your key in the dash or column?

Easy, boy.....I'm still quite a few years south of 70, and don't you forget it

I drive a pretty salty Cummins (about 350 HP, 650 torque), but it won't take a souped up 440 in a drag race. Might challenge you to a tractor pull, though...

Only gripe is that I had to install a $3000 sound system to drown out the noisy bastard....

Probably the best race I have had Chief....I dont care about beating up on another truck, its the fact that the old timer still had some fight left in him........

When I pulled up next to this dodge I never did see who was driving, never paid attention. All I remember is a HUGE puff of black smoke so I let it rip. Let me tell ya, I didnt think I was gonna catch him for about 5 seconds. Then I blew by him doing around 5 grand or so and looked over to laugh when all I seen was white hair. I couldnt believe it. I smiled for the next 10 miles as I seen grams and gramps trying to whoop on a youngin.

How does a 440 sound with headers and 2 chamber flowmasters......Music to my ears.

I would say it dieseling? The timing is off? Especially with bad gas.

Also caused from overheating.

I bet if you put better gas in her she will run alot better. Try that first. If it keeps doing it retard the timing a few degrees.

If I run that 92 AM/PM gas in my 440 she will spit and sputter when I shut her off. When I go to Chevron, it never misses a beat. I can actually feel the power difference in her. Let me know how it goes for ya.

Sounds wonderful...had a friend back when I was in college with a '68 Charger R/T...I used to love to just sit and listen to him whack the throttle. They had a response and sound that was totally unique...I'll never forget it.

39 years ago, when my Dad decided to buy a new car, I tried to talk him into a Plymouth Belvedere sitting in our local dealer's showroom...a 1966 with a 426 street hemi. Of course, he gave me up for brain dead and bought an Impala station wagon. He still has the damn thing...it has 29,000 correct miles and has the original 396 motor. WHY couldn't he have bought an Impala SS instead - or that Plymouth ???
