Ex-EchoStar workers back allegations -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ex-EchoStar workers back allegations By Greg Griffin Denver Post Staff Writer Three former EchoStar Communications Corp. employees have filed affidavits supporting allegations of abusive behavior by chief executive Charlie Ergen against a former female executive. One claims that Ergen once threw a "black marketing board" at Soraya Hesabi-Cartwright, former executive vice president of EchoStar's Dish Network satellite-TV service. Another supports Hesabi-Cartwright's description of a meeting of senior executives in which Ergen yelled and put his finger in Hesabi-Cartwright's face. The affidavits are the latest salvos in a lawsuit that Hesabi-Cartwright filed against EchoStar in January, claiming Ergen repeatedly singled her out for "violent yelling fits." She left the company in January 2004, forfeiting about $4 million in stock options. She is seeking the $4 million and punitive damages. EchoStar has filed a motion to dismiss the case, arguing that the claims aren't specific enough to prove that hostility occurred. EchoStar says that, to the contrary, Hesabi-Cartwright was rewarded by the company with promotions and pay raises. She made $13.5 million in salary and benefits in 2003. The company says the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and the Colorado Civil Rights Division each declined to pursue claims against EchoStar on behalf of Hesabi-Cartwright. An EchoStar spokesman declined Thursday to comment specifically on the affidavits. Sharon Baker, Hesabi-Cartwright's executive assistant at EchoStar, said on March 17 in a sworn affidavit in U.S. District Court in Denver that Ergen threw a "black marketing board" at Hesabi-Cartwright one night in her office. In another case, Baker said, Ergen pounded his fist on a table and a wall while he was "screaming and yelling" at Hesabi-Cartwright in her office. He then "picked up a gray conference chair," which he put down before stomping out of the office. Patricia Jacobs, a program manager, substantiated Hesabi-Cartwright's description of a December 2003 meeting of senior managers in which Ergen allegedly yelled and put his finger in the executive vice president's face. "Ms. Cartwright appeared to be extremely humiliated and embarrassed by Mr. Ergen's conduct in front of everybody," Jacobs said. "I personally believed that Ms. Cartwright feared that Mr. Ergen was going to physically strike her." Another ex-employee, Marty Langenderfer, former vice president of customer retention and quality assurance, said in an affidavit that Ergen "made the work environment for Ms. Cartwright intolerable through a relentless degradation of her contributions and skills." Hesabi-Cartwright also filed an affidavit. In it, she said that it appeared to her that the reason for Ergen's "increasingly hostile conduct" toward her was that she had a baby in 2001. After she became a mother, she said, Ergen no longer treated her as "one of the boys." "There were times when Mr. Ergen's conduct was physically threatening to me," she said. "His rages were extreme, and his behavior was often out of control. "It was to the point that it became intolerable." __________________ |

You know, there are a lot of people that get yelled at at work and have their boss pick on them....and I bet most of em' make a hell of a lot less than 13.5 Million/year. Not that I'm a big fan of Charlie Ergan, but this sounds like some frivilous BS to me. She'll probably get her settlement though.
Huhu, duh, I can spell. :-) Last edited by JT; 03-27-2005 at 09:00 PM.. |

Now what would a full sub cost if it wan not for all those multi million dollar paychecks.
I bet they could advertise her old job for say 2 million a year and be overrun with applications. I worked for a company like that many years ago. A Major department store, they hired people at minimum wages, you worked your way up the ladder in postitin and pay. When you got near the top they found a reason to get rid of you and replace you with the next guy down the pay ladder who would do your job for less money, Just to save money. Another place would take really good union reps who were a pain in their ass but they could not get rid of because of the union a management position at a great increase in pay. As soon as they lost union protection they would fire them for some reason or another. Big companies, the american way.

You're so right there bud, I was a union rep for years but refused any notion of a move into management(told them I had one qualification too many, a conscience)lol. So when I got sick they were falling over themselves telling me not to come back, I'd be better off on a disability(for my sake). I started to fight it but then thought hell, for 70 % of my pay and less bullshit I can do that. After a long spell with no pay I'm now officially disabled, they're happier and I'm at least livable until I'm dead anyway. But as Yellowbeard the pirate says in the famous Monty Python movie, " Wimps, won't catch me goin' around dyin', they'll have to kill me before I die !" I have stayed away from big business since then.
First time I was young Got a better offer from their competitor anyway. Second time I was ready to move on anyway I had started a business of my own. Used the temp. pay boost to get more credit and more new equipment. Sj

Makes sense actually. He must be screwing both his customers and dealers to be loosing so many.
The post dosen't say what she was in charge of but one of her supporters was in charge of customer retention before quitting. This new cell phone contract attitude seems to be reaping the wrong sort of reward. He needs to get back to his roots. Providing tv at a reasonable cost with excellent service. Never get that selling yourself and at rat shack. In my area three dish dealers were left. All three quit. Now you can only get em at rat shack and direct from charlie. That cannot be a good sign. Good thing I took on this hobby. Around here if you don't fix it yourself it dosen't get fixed. Even my subs. t160hq
