Amherst man admits stealing satellite services

6/11/2005

An Amherst man pleaded guilty Friday to mail fraud and violating the Digital Millenium Copyright Act by pirating and trafficking in devices used to steal satellite television programming, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.
Walter J. Buchholz, 67, of Rumson Road, faces 20 years for the mail fraud conviction and five more for violating the copyright act when he is sentenced Sept. 23 before U.S. District Judge John T. Elfvin.

Buchholz was under investigation by the Cyber Crime Squads of the FBI in the Buffalo and San Jose, Calif., areas. He was indicted in San Jose last September.

Buchholz admitted to manufacturing and distributing unauthorized devices to steal satellite subscription and pay-per-view programming from DISH network, according to Assistant U.S. Attorneys Paul J. Campana and Mark Krotoski of the Buffalo and San Jose offices, respectively.

He received about $308,000 from July 2002 to September 2004 as proceeds from his illegal trafficking, authorities said.
