Just trying to get some good info before I buy a DVB card. Sounds like something interesting to play with. Can someone that has a DVB up right now with Nagra 2 channels open tell me what card they are using and Software and how you would rate the card overall. That will help me decide what model I want to buy to play with. Thank you

Thats a good price for thatn card. But there are other cheaper ones for about $75 with shipping, the visonplus for eample. That nexus has onbard mpeg 2 decodding on that card so it does not eat up your cpu, thats why it cost more. It's a much better card. But a visionplus will also get the job done, you just need a fast computer for the decoding.

Hey guys,

The cheaper,software based DVB-S cards take a pretty good computer to run well. A 2ghz+ P4 system is recommended. The Nexus-s and other hardware based cards are more expensive but you can use a much less powerful system to run it well. A P3 800 will do the job using the hardwre based cards.
Also, alot of people are confusing DVB cards. Only DVB-S cards will work with satellite. There are other DVB cards that work with cable or antenna connections.

I can not comment on the vison plus card as I have never owned one. As of now I don't have a HD T/V, or have plans in the near future to buy one.I have used a 3100 and 3000 with an Atmega previous to that. So about a year and a half ago when I heard about N2 I bought A Nexus-s and a SG-2100 motor ( about 500.00 Canadian ) to Explore FTA and Iwent the expensive route, so again I can not comment on an FTA reciver. There have been lots of good reports here on the FTA receivers, so that also seems to be good option. Except for a few hours here and there, the nexus has been up and running since I bought it. There are 4 or 5 soft wares out there and they all work well, once you learn how to use them. They all have good and bad points. The nexus uses very little of your PC resources, you would not even know it is running when your using your PC for other things. I have 1.83 processor 512 ram 80 gig hard drive. I really dont think a dvb card would be the way to if other people ( wife and kids ) are use your computer, as the DVB cards are not plug and Play. There is a fair amout of programing, channels lists, EPG,s ect. I am 60 years old and have a wife and a cat, they use cable, but I think that my nexus-s is the best thing since sliced bread. (no plasric,no jtags ,no soft locks, no avrs, no ecms and no re-wireing. If i had to do again I would go the same route. A bit expensive, but well worth the extra dollers.

I've been running my setup since July of 03 and don't regret it one bit!

The key to these things is to always do more reading than posting. I guess that can be said for anything in this hobby.

Thanks for the feedback guys. Im planning to run it on a decent cpu. Im thinking it should be enough to run most of the cards out there. I just wanted to make sure I bought a model that was confirmed working now and decent quality.

I am currently playing with a little x cube computer that was cheap ~500 and is the size of a toaster. 2 gig processor 128 meg integrated vid card, 512 meg ddr ram ac3 optical and analog out. It only has one pci slot which is fine for the dvbs card. However that being said, after I moved my dvb card from my main computer I am having new issues to resolve. There is no 1 setup that will work for every computer.

I have been testing some basic problems and have found that even the channel scans are not the same from lnb to lnb, or dish to dish. If you are looking for something to use up your time then this is the option. This is not plug and play. It is a higher cost alternative but the overall stability makes it worth it.
