Ok folks.. Mili has been gracious enought to put in a modchip section.
Let's see who all is interested in this, whether it be looking for service or offering a service.
This is a fun little hobby and there is a little profit to be made, BUT, if you are like me, it's more about the satisfaction of doing the job.

Also, I'm getting involve in PS2 repairs..but to be honest, shipping a unit to someone to have it fixed isn;t a great idea, there are installers/repairers all over the place, and I'm sure there is one very near you.

Again, lets get some involvement here and see where we stand right now.

I havent yet finished my install of a crystal chips mod chip but it is mostly done. I am having trouble as some of the solder points are very very tiny.
I have tried cat5 wire and telephone cable, its still almost too big. What wire do you use on yours ??? trying to do this on a V12 small console

I use Kynar brand 30 guage wire wrap...
I get mine at action-electronics.com
If you are installing this on a v12 console, you will need to also perform a laser fix..
he most common is the Subzero fix..... you can actually buy a pcb board that's ready to solder into place, or you can do it the old fashion diode route.. just do a search for subzero fix and you'll get it. There is also a fix by comsoft.... again, just google it and you'll fins it. It is very important that you install this fix.. Sony even recognized the problem, and even though they would never admit it, they followed the subzero fix to the letter to correct the slimline laser burnout problems.

[edit] The Crystal Chip is a solid chip, but my preference is the Matrix Infinity...... very stable chip, has stealth mode, sleep mode to prevent overheating, and upgradeable firmware flashing. With DNA$ patching you can play your copied/backup games online as well.

I've done both xbox v1.1 and ps2 v12 and v7 the xbox was much easier and the v7 was not that bad with a solder less but the v12 was a big B.

Xbox modding is in IMO the best thing in the world. There is so much that can be done with one that you more than likely won't use it for it's full potential. Only draw back, they are big machines.

i got the 1.1 lite version which is supposed to include a laser fix for v12 within the board.(tell me if Im wrong on this) It is also supposed to be flashable which was other reason i chose it. might want to upgrade software from factory settings hehe !

If you found that at rat-shack, then you are a lucky individual.. I checked all5 rat-shacks in my area, with no luck. I had to order mine.
Make sure you aren;t getting it confussed with their magnet wire..... that stuff isn;t insulated.. had one ratshack try and tell me it was the same stuff.. I took the real stuff to him once I got mine in to show him the difference, he was a bit hesitant to admit they weren;t the same thing, but in the endm he did.

Must be my area then. I have been in the six rat shacks in my area and all of them have it. Says 30 gauge Kynar wire right on the package and yes it does have insulation.

Any tips and tricks on soldering the wires to the very tiny solder points. I've got a v4 PS2 and a Matrix Infinity chip. I would like to install this chip myself if possible (I do have some basic soldering skills as I've made my own max/mel emulators) but the I've noticed that some of the solder points are extremely fine (ie. soldering to the the legs of chips). How does one do this without shorting out the unit.

Worst case scenario, does anybody know of a place in the SF Bay Area who does mods?

The most important thing here is to NOT rush yourself. The more you practice, the better you get.
First, find an old video card or something similar and practice on that for a while, when ya feel ya got it down, start the mod.

Flux is your friend here. Be sure and use flux when installing your chip, as small a factor as it seems, the benifits will show themselves the first time you have to reinstall a chip.

Use a small tipped iron.

The fine points on the bios chip are the toughest to do. I suggest you tin the wire first, place flux on the pin, touch the iron to the top of the bios pin and the wire to the bottom of the pin, do not try to presolder the pins on the bios, there just isn;t enuff room there to insure you don;t bridge them.
One trick I've heard of is using 2 razorblades. Place one on either side of the pin you are going to solder to prevent bridging from happening. It sounds like it should work fine, but I've just never seen the need to do it.

Use a handsfree magnifing glass if your eyes just aren;t what they use to be, (such as mine, grrr).

Be sure to double check every solder with a multimeter to insure you have good contact and check surrounding points for any bridging.

lastly, remember this, we do this for the fun/hobby factor... enjoy it as you do it, cause once your done, the satisfaction of haivng done it yourself is work the headache you are gona get the first time you do this.

Also, I meant to suggest, when soldering tot he bios points, theer are alternative pads to use if you are more comfortable with those. You have to use the pins on the left side, but for the right side, just follow the traces to the pad you need to solder to and use that. presolder the pads to make it much easier and as before, be sure and use flux.
Here's an image to use as reference for your v5....... you can see the pads I am referring to on the right hand side of the bios chip, **note** this install didn;t use the pads, it;s here as a refernce only, to see what I was referring to.

The razor blade trick is what I did. You just need to make sure you use the thin blades and not the untility knife blades. The razor blades usually come with an oil type of coating and I have not had any problems with the solder trying to stick to the blade instead.

My question is "what is the best proggy to copy the PS2 games ?"

I use DVD Decrypt most of the time, but I also use Alchohol 120 and Nero on occassion. Most games are DVD format now, but there is the occassional CD Rom still used, so Nero and Alchohol are used for that.
