Tried if you can , let me know

Hi testers,

I know this is not a site for PC questions but few people have asked questions on the past.

I have a problem with my PC. When I powered the unit on , sometimes will take 20 to 30 minutes to start up . When the unit stars , it would ask for F1 to set up , or F2 to default the settings.
I did inspect the power box , the on /off button and apparently everything seems ok.

Any help would be appreciated.

I suppose its windows xp,.. so try without network cable attached and safe mode,..note differance.

then normal mode no network cable

then all together,

sounds like its looking for something.

Is the cmos time correct,... new cmos battery would be good

F8 at start up and see the command for safe mode or directory service repair mode. See what line it hangs at on the start up. google that with the term slow boot "..>your message here...<"

disable everthing under msconfig start up tab except what it needs to boot.
Most of the time it is a network card or a thing called "MUP.sys
server 2000 is the worst of them all along with XP

Sorry guys , I am running windows 98 sec Edition. Yes the clock is all mest up, I have to reset it all the time when the computer reboots. I added a video card and a audio card recently. but the problem was there long before. If I'm not mistaken this problem started after I added a web-cam and MSN messasger to my PC, but I remvoed it. and reinstalled windows 98 from scratch.

sounds like your cmos battery is dead; its on the motherboard. Everytime you power off the machine, it looses the cmos settings, date, time, drive id, config data....so when you boot first time, it has to reidentify the hardware, and also, windows doesn't like it when the date and time are off compared to internet time.

It's a watch battery just tak eit out and take it with you so you can match the numbers. and 98 se It may be time to upgrade if possible. Anyway plug the new BAT in let the POC find all the hardware then when in windows or if you know how to get to the BIOS change the date and time. that should be it.
