Stupid retarded question!

Hi, I am getting a laptop at best buy tomorrow, and I don't know what I need to hook it up to my DSL. Sorry for this dumb question! Thank you in advance, and Happy thanksgiving to you all and your family!

Most new laptops have wireless built in these days if not a pcmia option card can be added to almost any laptop. Note linksys wireless isn't compatible with alot of dsl wireless systems especially Verizons Westell crap. Belkin makes some nice stuff that works on about any system and the new extended range N type stuff works about 4-5 times the distance of others.
For the other side of your wireless network you need the dsl modem and you can get those with wireless built right in. They usually have 4 ethernet ports for direct cabling and the wireless function as well. I run a Westell 327 from Verizon and none of my linksys stuff works other than a usb adaptor sometimes.

Now make sure since you have the higher speed you have a good firewall and updated antivirus program always running, You can get smoked in seconds otherwise, Not like dial up.
Also might want to set up the wep security for the wireless network or if others are around you everone will be tapping on your wireless internet connection and slow your speed way down.

If they try charging you for the dsl modem hit Ebay, Alot of great cheap dsl/wireless deals to be found.

Good luck and happy turkey day!!

you don't need a firewall if you are running off a router, it has it built in.
I think every laptop now has built in wireless b/g. You don't need anything better than b/g unless you are living in a 5 story 5,000 square foot house.

Go for a wireless router, I have a Linksys and never have had a problem. Make sure you use one of the security encryptions otherwise your neighbours can use your connection.

I have 1 desktop, 2 laptops and a PSP using the wireless all through my house and have no problems receiving a signal.

Thank you guys very much! I waited 10 hours to get a lap top for 240$ and they sold out! So I got a vaio for 600. I got it up and running with a router! I am using norton, zonealarm and spysweeper. Downloaded the cracked ones! Do you guys think I have enough protection? Thanks again

I wouldn't have used Nortons that is going to slooooooooooow down the computer there are lots of free antivirus, AVG is one of them. A $240 lap top was probably a gimmick to get people to line up for them. What kind of system is the Sony, give some specs. Hard to believe it is a good one for $600.00

What kind of antivirus do you recommend? I want one that protects good and doesn't slow down the computer. I am using the cracked version of bit defender on my desktop, but I have some problems with it updating. I heard kasperkey was a good one, does anybody know if there are any problems with it updating? I don't think norton is slowing down the laptop though. I don't think a free antivirus will do very good. Thank you.

Nix the Norton and keep the zonealarm. ZoneAlarm also comes with a pretty darn good anti-spyware. Kaspersky has a great reputation too.

Glad to help. Make sure that you uninstall the Norton before you try to run another anti-virus prog. Two A/Vs running will give you headaches.

I say go for it. Worst thing that can happen is that you'll need to blow it out and try another copy. You should always keep the ant-virus definitions up to date for maximum protection.

AVG is a good anti virus program, just because it is free doesn't mean it isn't any good. Look at Firefox, it is free and much better than Internet Explorer!

My cable provider lets me use F-Secure for free on 3 computers.

You are behind a router why worry about attacks from the outside, you don't need zone alarm.

This is not good advice unless you are restricting outbound traffic at your hardware firewall, or running a good, updated, and monitored intrusion prevention system. If you unknowingly download a trojan, a normal firewall will allow it to call home and you would never know it. Personal firewalls like Zonealarm and Sygate will alert you that "a new" application is attempting to contact something on the internet, and gives you the option to allow or deny this traffic.

Well said, Ohms. I'll second that.

Hacker, any chance that you have a 64bit running on a 32bit or vis versa? This problem you talk of is odd, I mean it's either updated or not. And, the download site you were at has both versions. Just tossing a thought out.

This "outbound" protection is both a blessing and a curse. The most common complaint that I get about Zone Alarm and similar products is that it alerts too often, and for benign and valid access of the internet. That's unfortunate, because when it alerts too often for all these "false positives", people start ignoring the alerts, or turn off the feature completely. When a real problem happens they're unable to distinguish it from the noise, and frequently ignore that as well.

If the arriving packet does not exactly match traffic that is currently expected by the router, the router figures that it's just unwanted "Internet noise" and discards the unsolicited packet of data.

With a NAT router protecting your connection to the Internet — even if you only have one computer on the LAN behind the router — none of the Internet scanning and worms and hackers and other annoying and malicious Internet nonsense can get to your computer or computers.

If the NAT router isn't already expecting the incoming data, because one of the machines on the LAN asked for it from the Internet, the router silently discards it and your private network is never bothered.

Here is a great page to check to see how secure you are. I just have my router going and nothing is being detected.
