I have windows xp and was thinking about upgrading to vista. What do you guys think about windows vista? What makes vista different then xp? Does vista work with all dss programs? All opinions are very much appreciated, thanks!

I build maintain and work on pc's everyday. unless you are going to build or buy a pc with vista I wouldnt do it. I have people bringing me computers that they bought 8 months ago with the promise of vista compatible and its not working (its an HP thing). I would give it a year and then switch. Alot of programs that perform well in xp dont in vista some do but not enough for my comfort. XP works well enough but you have to remember thats after almost 5 years of patches and fixes. It just needs some time.

Yep,
Just as Mili is saying no good for nothing, was trying that piece of sh*t software on a test computer , first AVG did not work, update option not compatible with Vista, than I try to install Alcoholl 120%, computer crashed during install of the program, after restart error message after error message. So for me no more Vista Boris279

I belong to some pretty high tech orginations, pay sites, used in one of my businesses, and the recomendation from ALL is NOT to upgrade to vista. They tell me that their programs (12 in all) will run "eventually" once the program writers have finished with their end, but they are ALL recommending NOT installing vista.
BTW, have you seen the new commercials for Mac, talking to PC who is about to undergo a "transformation?" Pretty funny. Photto

I have new machines. One is a Sony VAIO which is running vista with no issues at all. It's vista ultimate so it has the media center functionality built in. As I said, no issues.
I have an even newer Dell Precision M90. I have a dual boot setup with XP Pro and Vista Ultimate. I play with vista on it. Mostly trying to get it to work correctly with drivers and what not. I do not use it for production because it has way to many issues. I consider vista to be bleeding edged only for the super-geeks that are willing to get bloody. It's beautiful and has nice features, but in a production environment when you need to actually get things done........well.... not ready for prime time IMHO. BTW, have you seen the PC/MAC commercial about vista's security? Pretty darn accurate if you ask me. Deny or Allow, Deny or Allow, Deny or Allow, Deny or Allow, Deny or Allow..... What a pain in the A$$

It is lot to do with the computer people are installing it on. !!!!!
. Most of us do not have a computer IT WILL GO ON. . Look at the speck of installing it, pent 3, no no pent 4, maybe with a lot of problems . vista ultimate is FOR NEW COMPUTERS no old one like the pent 4. . Just like the new DVD, no more full screen movies, just wide screen to sell wide screen. just like the pent 2, 3, 4 they are out to sell new computers set up for vista ultimate

I should state that my Sony VAIO is a P4 HT 3.6 gig with 2 gigs of ram and SATA II Raid array. Nvidia 6600 with 512 ram.
Runs Ultimate with NO Problems at all. I use it heavily as a media center PC.

Thanks for the replies. I decided to wait a while to upgrade. Looks like theres still lots of bugs in vista that need to be fixed.

Bottom line... Unless vista offers you a feature that you really need but don't currently have, forget about upgrading to it. More trouble than it's worth at the present time.

I have vista ultimate as well. i got the kinks worked out and love it, I should state that i do not test on the computer with vista. I kept ol xp pro on my testing computer, because it works and it works well for that. no need to mess with something that you are comfortable with. I do like it on my laptop. i dont' think my testing computer will handle it well. cheap video card AMD Athlon 1500 (1300 mhz) with 2 gb of ram. my laptop has 1.6 ghz dual core 64 bit with a gig of ram running vista 256 k video card if i remember right. and i can tell you right now. i had vista business on here but when i went ot ultimate to really get the bells and whistles you better have 2gb of ram, i run over 60 percent of ram with no windows open

If you're looking for something to frustrate, burn up your time, do install Vista. It's not fully backwards (at this time) compatible with legacy software. You will need at least 2 Gigs of memory, any less than that ....forget it. If you want the translucent screens and fancy doo-dads, purchase at least a $300 video card. I have Vista and it's living quite happily on it's DVD (got it as a free upgrade) until SP2 comes along and even then would have to think about it. If it's not borke, don't fix it! ;-) |

Fpr those in the DTP area
Quarkxpress 7.x will not run on Vista but 6.X will,... even on a core 2 duo with 2 gig ram etc.
probably will work later but not for now. |

I have it on a laptop and a new dell, Well, to use it as a stand alone, I guess that it is okay, but just for sh** and giggles I have tried some of the standard programs that I use in testing, and well, just like mili said, it is a real POS! Personally, I would just stick with what works, if xp is working, I wouldn't even think about doing a upgrade. If it isn't broke, dont fix it!

I'm in the process of changing over to Linux. It's been a learning experiance, but only on one computer so far. Has anyone had any joy on reconstructing their working programs in Linux, or should I keep the other computer with the XP?
Thanks, Photto
