ECM....Possible Prevention!

ECM - Is an acronym for ELECTRONIC COUNTER MEASURE or Entitlement Control Message.
Basically Your Provider doesn't want anyone getting free TV. They surf the net and see how all of us are doing it. Then they put lots of research in to find a way to stop you from getting TV. They then send down a signal in the STREAM that detects what you have in the card slot and if it doesn't like it then the receiver will either LOOP your CAM or reprogram your TSOP and/or EEPROM. To protect your self from ECM's you need to lock your TSOP, EEPROM.
If you don't have the TSOP locked an ECM can come down the stream that erases this software and makes it so you only get 1 to 3 channels. It can be fixed by removing the chip and reprogramming it, but it's cheaper to go buy a new receiver. Locking the TSOP isn't necessary but your receiver will get killed sooner or later. Better safe then sorry. You may be able to use JTAG to fix ECM'ed TSOP's. The underside of locking the TSOP is that there are ECM's that now can see this. When the ECM sees that the TSOP is locked, some receivers are being hit. Yes, your screwed either way. This method of locking your reciever is only Prevention ...not a “Fix” as some would have it!

The First aquisition when Testing should be a JTAG ("Joint Test Access Group").This enables you to back up your Tsop’s before you start testing and “Fix” an ECM when it has “Hit” Your reciever.....There are Basically two types..SIMPLE and BUFFERED.

It is also important to know that this is an ongoing hobby. Getting up and running is a great feeling, but sometimes it is short lived. As we strive to overcome all the obstacles and ECM's that your Provider uses, they doing the same to shut us down. It is an ongoing battle of the wits. Generally, they target one particular aspect of pirating in an ECM. If you happen to be in the range of the ECM, you could be without TV. For 1 hour, or 6 months. If you can't do without your TV. you should consider a variety of testing options. By expanding your ability to test using multiple ways, you have a better chance of having uninterrupted TV. It is also wise to keep at least 1 subbed unit in the house that has not been tampered with. This way if you get hit with an ECM that knocks out your testing unit, you still have TV. to watch on the subbed unit.

Hope this Answers some of your Questions.
